A Painted House by John Grisham
Let me say WOW, WOW, WOW! I am still bowled over by what a fantastic book this is! I’ve read several John Grisham books and they’ve all been good, but this one is his best easily. Its so different from his legal stories, so its a bit unexpected for him, but maybe it just shows the depth of his talent. Luke Chandler, the main character of the story, literally and unexaggeratedly comes to life on the pages of this book. You can see him, and the farm easily in your mind as you follow him. There were times I actually laughed out loud while reading. Grisham captures the true candid nature and single mindedness of a seven year old boy. At the end, I was teary eyed. The depiction of his Pappy, and the never ending fretting over cotton as a hobby ran so true. Nothing in this story feels fictional. You will fall in love with Luke. It reads so true to life, as if its one of your own family passing down the tale of your ancestors and their struggles. There’s no sex and no gratitous violence, nothing sensationalized or overplayed at all. This is supposed to be a Hallmark movie but I’ve yet to find it on tv. This book is so good I’m thinking of reading it to my mom, since her eyesight won’t allow her to read paperbacks. Whether you are a Grisham fan or not, this one is a must read.
