An hour of fondling Froyo
I decided to do a manual update on my Moto Droid to Froyo (2.2) this morning. Here are my first reactions to the new features:
- 5 home screens! I needed the extra real estate, I’m a widget whore :)
- Transitions between screens and apps is smooth and snappy.
- Love that the camera controls are no longer nested but now right on the viewer.
- The little dots that help you determine what screen you are on are a nice touch. I wiped all my widgets and shortcuts so I could start with a blank slate and it was hard to tell which screen was which without those.
- Move to SDCard. I wasn’t expecting this feature at all so I can’t complain that only 4 of my currently installed apps allowed me to move them over.
- The visual changes are nice, really sleek.
- The new mini bar with the phone, browser and new drawer pull is pretty cool as well. Very handy but small and unobtrusive.
- Not sure how I feel about the merge calendar widget (google calendar and enterprise calendar in the same widget)
If you were pissing and moaning about not getting the native tethering, I am hearing now that its there but haven’t confirmed. I use EasyTether Pro (9.95) but EasyTether free works great too, just no https log in. So if the native tethering really doesn’t work on Froyo for Moto Droid, no big deal just grab EasyTether.
The lack of wifi hotspot really has zero impact on me. I didn’t see how I would be making use of that.
UPDATE:
The OTA package FG01B has been pulled due to bugs. If you already did the manual update, don’t panic. When the new OTA package pushes out it will simply update your OS normally.
Only issues I’ve found:
When exiting an app back to a home screen, it takes about 7 seconds for the icons to show up.
Dolphin Browser feature open a new tab is not working. It simply reloads the existing tab.
Yes USB Native tethering is present but word on the web is that its not free. This is to be expected if other users are going to be charged for tethering why would Froyo give it to Moto Droid users for free?
