Droid Review Part 2
If you are a new Droid owner you may want to check out my post: First 48 hours with Droid.
A month into Droid life I posted about likes and dislikes and my chosen apps. The Droid function itself is great and I have no real changes of opinion on the device itself. One complaint I had was about the screen going dark during a call. Either it was a fluke or the upgrade fixed it but that damn Droid knows when you pull it away from your face because you need to press a key and it lights back up. ![]()
The issue with the display not turning off when full charge is reached seems to be resolved. I completely forgot it was even happening!
The Droid Wifi not working at home was fixed by removing the password from my home network and enabling MAC filtering instead.
One issue that continues to annoy me is the light next to the cable port. Anytime you have the Droid plugged in to charge, that light is on. It so fucking BRIGHT!! I keep my Droid on the nightstand as its my alarm clock and that light is like a seach light illuminating the whole room. I try to cover it up with something but its not easy because the cable is short and it lies close to the edge. I tried coloring it in with a marker but that didn’t help either. I see no reason for this big spotlight to be on during charge.
Now let’s revisit the whole screen guard issue. I bought EZ Guard screen guards. 5 of them for 5 bucks on Ebay. My only complaints: gathers lint and a bit of drag when swiping. Numerous people told me that the Zagg Invisible Shield was the end all be all, the answer to my problems. So I shelled out the $25 dollars and ordered it. Guess what? I kinda hate it. It collects lint just as bad. It shows smears (the EZ guard doesn’t) and the surface isn’t as smooth as EZ Guard. Now it does come with a whole puzzle of pieces to cover the entire phone which could be a selling point for you but for me its not. I have a face plate that covers the rest of the phone. I did install all the pieces simply because I paid so much for it. Honestly at this point I’m thinking of taking the screen cover off and going back to EZ Guard. OR after seeing the video below I may forgo the guard all together. My Keyring will work perfectly then.
Here are the apps I currently have installed and comments where I feel necessary.
- Droid Light- my phone is my flashlight, this just makes it easier
- Dolphin Browser- Firefox for the Droid
- DroidLive Lite- I rarely use this but it works great. I was told I could use it to find old Howard Stern shows but its only channel 101 and its inconsistent. That’s a content problem and nothing to do with the function of the app.
- Google Goggles- I still haven’t tested it with buildings (will do so in NOLA though). The bar code scanner isn’t as good as Shop Savvy.
- Handcent- Just got this yesterday. Prettifies your SMS messages

- Google Sky map- I haven’t used this either. I’m not outside at night apparently. Maybe when it warms up.
- Key Ring- Stores my rewards cars in the phone instead of on my key ring. My screen guard prevents actually scanning of the barcode to work as intended.
- Locale- This app is the one I depend on the most and can’t live without. The free version worked PERFECTLY. Recently the free version was killed off and the paid version is $10. Its far less reliable than the free version which sucks tremendously. There is no other app that does what this one does and I NEED it so I’m willing to deal with the problems now in hopes there is a future update that will return it to its former degree of awesomeness.
- Meebo- the online, all in one chat client, on your Droid! Log in to all your IM accounts at once.
- MusicSleep- It sings me to sleep and shuts itself off. Awwww

- Mute-One touch silences everything on your phone, a must have!
- Note Everything-Jot notes and lists
- PDAnet- Tether your Droid WITHOUT rooting Free version no longer supports https but that doesn’t affect me much. If you need the ability to tether, its worth the $29 to get the full version. NOT AVAILABLE IN THE MARKETPLACE
- Photos safe-because not all photos are meant to be seen by everyone
- Pic say- photoshop your pics right on your Droid!
- Seesmic Android- Seesmic makes the most cutting edge amazing Twitter apps and the Android version is no different. Just this week it upgraded to give multiple account support. Its the only Twitter app on my Droid as of that update.
- Shazam-What is that song on the radio? Love it? Buy it instantly from amazon
- Shopsavvy-for the smart shopper, use the bar code on a product to look up prices, reviews and availabilty instantly. Rarely fails to find a product.
- Google talk- Google chat client, flawless of course
- Talk to me keyboard- Speech to text for every single app on your Droid, works great!
- Tripit-Load your itinerary into Droid. Haven’t used it yet
- Google voice- Route your calls via Google Voice to your Droid with seamless integration. I love it! Saves me minutes :)
- Wave secure- secure your Droid data if its stolen, works remotely! Must have.
- Zen timer- Just a simple, soothing bell timer for my meditation
Games:
- Tetrads-Tetris
- Connect Four
- Raging Thunder- Car racing game
