I touched the Droid
So a month or so ago I had my mind made up that the new Blackberry bold 2 was gonna be the new phone for me. Then the Droid buzz began to build and I started to waiver. Lured by the temptation of running 6 apps at once I was toying with the idea of buying my first ever gen 1 device AND switching carriers. It required a store visit to lay hands on the Droid.
My baby sister has been in need of a new phone for a long, long time. She doesn’t even have sms/mms messaging. I suggested we go together (she’s on Verizon) and she was game.
The Droid exterior is hardly worthy of much excitement. Its pretty dull and uninteresting. Maybe its a cloaking device to keep your loser friends from stealing it?
I had a hard time with the physical keyboard. My hands are small and it seemed hard to reach the center keys while holding the device naturally. I then tried the onscreen keyboard, totally new to me. I found I had to press to or three times on prompts to get it to respond. Actual typing was slow going because I was getting the wrong keys over and over.
I picked up the Eris but the demo was dead. I moved on to the Storm 2. The screen is brighter and the touch screen felt more responsive but I was still having a hard time getting the right keys. With small hands I thought this would be a non issue for me.
At this point I decided to try to help my sister make a phone choice. Once that was done and we were waiting to be helped I drifted back to the Droid. Still finding it a bit clunky but a little more natural in my hand. Just after we finished up I spotted another Eric demo. I only played with it for a few minutes. It looked pretty sweet but the track ball seemed out of place.
So I need more time to think about the Droid. $300.00 is a lot of money for a phone I’m not really in love with. I’m going to think about it a bit more.
